Sarita Daftary-Steel

Senior Community Organizer

New York, NY

I am honored to do this work with JustLeadershipUSA to end mass incarceration because I want to live in a more compassionate world, because I believe that people are too valuable to be thrown away, and because, in the end, nobody’s free until everybody’s free.

Sarita Daftary joined JustLeadershipUSA as a Community Organizer in May 2017. Sarita has nearly fifteen years of experience in community development and community organizing work in Brooklyn. Most recently, she was the director of the Green Light District at El Puente in Williamsburg, and previously worked with United Community Centers as the East New York Farms! (ENYF) Project Director. She led ENYF to become a nationally recognized model for youth and community engagement in food justice work. Sarita graduated from Georgetown University with a degree in sociology and government, has completed additional training in Oral History and in College &Career Counseling, and is also a graduate of the Coro Leadership New York Fellowship and the Leadership Caucus of the Community Resource Exchange.
